This would be the ultimate gift for any horseman or woman. The rounded dark
brown English bridle leather provides a beautiful backdrop for the sterling
and sterling overlay trim. It buckles between the ears with a square cut
5/8" sterling overlay buckle and features a matching buckle on the
throatlatch. Eighteen solid sterling silver ferrules decorate the cheeks and
browband. The browband conchos are 2" sterling overlay and matching
conchos at the bit measure 3/4".
Price as shown- $735

Close up view of the browband conchos. These have a vintage look that I
really like.

Here is a classic rounded headstall in chestnut English bridle leather. It
adjusts with a 5/8" sterling overlay buckle between the ears and has a
matching 1/2" sterling overlay buckle on the throatlatch. The sterling
overlay conchos at the browband have a smooth edge for a more streamlined
look and are 1-3/4" in diameter. The headstall attaches to the bit with
a flat sterling overlay ferrule.

A horse with a refined head would look great in this dark brown 1/2" wide
bridle horse headstall. The conchos at the browband are 1-3/4" sterling
overlay with a twisted rope edge, matching 5/8" conchos attach it
to the bit. The 1/2" buckles (one on the throatlatch and one between
the ears) are also sterling overlay with a rope edge.
Price as shown- $412

This dark brown 5/8" headstall is dressed with nearly all of my
favorite sterling overlay trim. The three piece horseshoe buckle set is
spectacular as are the CM style sterling overlay bit hangers. The 2" smooth
edge sterling overlay conchos at the browband add a timeless touch.
Price as shown- $469

|
The 1-3/4" sterling overlay daisy conchos dress up this medium brown 5/8"
headstall. Leather ties attach it to the bit and there are #132
stainless steel buckles on both cheeks and the throatlatch.
Price as shown- $188

|
This chestnut 3/4" headstall would be fabulous on a snaffle bit. The
three piece buckle sets on each cheek and at the throatlatch are all
sterling silver overlay as are the 2-1/2"
conchos at the browband and the 1-1/4" conchos at bit.
Price as shown- $367

Here is a distinctive split ear headstall. This one is dark brown
English bridle leather and sports matching sterling overlay daisy buckles
and conchos on each cheek. The buckles measure 1-3/4" across and
the conchos are 1/2", 5/8" and 1" sterling overlay.
Price as shown- $380

This black split ear headstall is based on a photo in a late 1940s Visalia
Saddlery catalog. I chose to use conchos with engraving that reminded me of
that vintage Visalia look. The concho buckles on both cheeks are 1-3/4"
sterling overlay. This headstall attaches to the bit with matching 1-1/2"
sterling overlay conchos. The card suit conchos that dress up both cheeks
are also overlay and are approximately 1/2" across.
Price as shown- $362

|
This is a slightly fancier version
of our concho-covered buckle headstall. This 5/8" wide headstall is
chestnut English bridle leather with the edges dyed a very dark brown. The
flanged-edge silver overlay conchos are 2" in diameter at the buckle
and the browband. The bottom of the cheek pieces are swelled out to
accommodate 1" matching conchos. At the throatlatch is a stainless
steel #132 buckle.
Price as shown- $185

|
Here is a 1/2" black bridle bit
(spade or half-breed) headstall. This would be a nice alternative to a
rounded headstall. I used a long oval sterling overlay concho at the
browband and matching 1/2" conchos for the bit attachment. The
buckles are style #52 and are also sterling silver overlay.
Price as shown- $276

|
Sterling overlay California conchos at the
browband and bit (2-1/4" and 1" respectively) dress up this
5/8" tan English bridle leather headstall. Note the dyed edges and
the swelled ends of the cheeks. The #12 buckles at the cheeks and
throatlatch are also sterling silver overlay.

|
This 1/2" black English bridle leather
headstall is highlighted by the three 1/2" by 5/8" sterling
silver overlay flat ferrules on each cheek. I used silver overlay #52
buckles on the cheeks and at the throatlatch. The 2" #31 conchos at
the browband are sterling overlay also. |
|
This is a 1/2" dark brown headstall
designed for use on a finished bridle horse. All of the trim is sterling
silver overlay. The browband conchos are 2" UFOs, the conchos at the
bit are 1/2" high domes and the buckles are style #5.
Price as shown-$324

|
This is an interesting sliding ear headstall.
We used the client's vintage silver at the bit and on the sliding ear
piece. Although it's barely visible in this photo, the headstall buckles
between the horse's ears.
Price for headstall only- $62

This dark brown English bridle leather is only 1/2" wide to make it an alternative to a rounded leather headstall
for a spade bit. This one has #21 buckles on both cheeks and at the
throatlatch. The browband conchos are style #24 and are 1-1/4" high.
They are oval shaped with graduated silver beads on each side. Flat
ferrules 1/2" wide by 5/8" long at the bit finish it off. All of the
silver trim on this headstall is sterling silver overlay. |
|
This is another 1/2" headstall. It has #7 sterling
silver overlay buckles at the cheeks and throatlatch, 2"
sterling overlay octagon conchos at the browband and 5/8" octagon
conchos, also sterling silver overlay, at the bit. Note the slight swell
at the bottom of the cheeks to accommodate the larger conchos. |
|
This 5/8" chestnut English bridle leather
headstall is both simple and elegant. I used #5 buckles on each
cheek and at the throatlatch. The conchos at the browband and bit are
style #14. I used 5/8" conchos at the bit and 1-3/4" conchos at the
browband. All of the conchos and buckles are sterling silver overlay.
Price as shown-$303 |
|
This is another 1/2" spade or half breed headstall
done in dark brown English bridle leather. This one has 2" sterling
overlay #31 conchos at the browband, #8 sterling overlay buckles at cheeks
and throatlatch and bit hangers to hold the bit. The bit hangers are also
sterling silver overlay.
Price as shown-$348 |

I owe my father, Bob Douglas, for the design of this
headstall and the two that follow it. Last winter he made a few headstalls
for himself that used conchos to cover the cheek buckles. I asked if I
could use the idea too and these headstalls are the result. This 5/8"
chestnut English bridle leather headstall has 1-3/4" sterling silver
overlay steer head conchos at the browband and cheek. Leather ties attach
this headstall to the bit. |
|
We took this black English bridle leather headstall a
step further with the big conchos. This one has 1-3/4" sterling
silver overlay conchos (style BES) at the brow and bit and matching 2" conchos at
the cheek buckle. |
|
This is another of our more unique headstalls. This tan
English bridle leather headstall is 5/8" wide and has 2"
sterling silver overlay conchos with raised silver beads at the browband and cheek buckle. There
are ties at the bit and a stainless steel buckle at the throatlatch. |
|
This unusual headstall was made for Gloria Lybecker
from Washington state. She specified a black 3/4" headstall with a
natural appliqué and this is what we came up with. The raised appliqué
on the browband was done in kangaroo. The conchos are 1-1/2" sterling
overlay with a jeweler's bronze initial. |
|
Here is a close up of the actual appliqué to show
detail. |
|
This is an amazing headstall. It is a single sliding
ear in chestnut English bridle leather with two of the biggest, classiest buckles I have ever seen. Yes, the
conchos on the side are actually buckles. Both buckles, accent concho on the
ear piece and the two conchos at the bit are all sterling silver overlay. The
accent concho is a 1" square, the pair of conchos at the bit are 1/2"
squares and the buckles are 2" square. The following two photos are close ups of the trim. |

and of the square concho at the bit. |
|
This was another headstall we made up because we
couldn't stand to see the silver in bags and not on a headstall. The buckles,
concho and bit hangers are all sterling silver overlay. The raised berries on
the buckles and concho are jeweler's bronze. The leather is tan English bridle
leather. Below are close ups of the buckle
and bit hangers.

A good close view of the California buckle set. |
|
Now this is a nice set of sterling overlay bit hangers.
Simple, elegant and functional. |
|
When we designed this headstall, I wasn't sure I
would like it, but it proved me wrong in spades. It is one of my
favorites. This 5/8" dark brown headstall is accented with flat
sterling overlay ferrules 1" long. There are three on each cheek and
six across the browband. The browband conchos are 2-1/2" sterling overlay and
the buckles are overlay as well. |
|
This is the first rounded headstall with solid
sterling ferrules we made. There are four ferrules on each cheek and eight
across the browband. This headstall is dark brown with style #5 sterling overlay
buckles and 2" sterling overlay conchos at the browband. The overlay
conchos at the bit are 3/4". Note even the throatlatch has been rounded
on this and the other rounded headstalls below.
|
|
This rounded and ferruled headstall is
stunning. There are three solid sterling ferrules on each cheek and five
across the browband. The buckle sets and conchos are sterling silver overlay.
Note the raised stars on the buckle, keeper and tip. The browband conchos
are 3" across and the conchos at the bit are 1". This headstall is
made of chestnut English bridle leather.
|
|
Here is another rounded headstall done in dark
brown. The ferrules are solid sterling and all three buckle sets are
sterling overlay. The conchos are also sterling overlay. Note the unusual
concho design. These are very classy.
|
|
This rounded headstall is made with chestnut
English bridle leather. The octagon shaped conchos are 2" in diameter
with 1/2" matching octagons at the bit. All of the conchos and buckles
are sterling overlay and the 11 ferrules are solid sterling silver.
|
|
This is a very sharp looking rounded headstall. The
browband conchos are 2-1/2" and are sterling overlay. The large
scalloped buckles are overlay as well. Note the long tips on the buckle
sets. Rather than using conchos for the bit attachment, this headstall
features bit hangers. These are sterling overlay. This headstall is my
favorite of the rounded ones.
|
|
This is a good example of our medium brown
English bridle leather. This 5/8" headstall sports solid nickel flat
head spots, silver plate buckles on each cheek and at the throatlatch, 1-1/2" silver plate berry edge conchos at the browband and matching
5/8" conchos at the bit. |
|
Another very nice medium brown 5/8"
headstall. This one is also trimmed with silver plate buckles and conchos.
The squares in the center of the browband conchos are raised, giving it a three
dimensional look. This one also illustrates how nice basket stamping looks
even on the darker leather. |
|
This is a 3/4" headstall done in chestnut
English bridle leather with square brass buckles, a stunning pair of 2-1/2" brass conchos at
the browband and the browband is appliquéd. The appliqué was done in
burgundy kangaroo and is slightly raised. We put a 7/8" browband on
this headstall so the appliqué would be wider and have a greater visual
impact. |
|
This is a 1-1/4" headstall made with
chestnut English bridle leather and brass cart buckles. Because of the
width of the straps I was able to get several rows of basket stamping on
it. This basket stamp is a little different than what you usually see.
Note the arrow effect in the center of the line of stamping. For obvious
reasons this way of using a basket stamp is called an arrowhead basket.
These wide headstalls can also be done with several rows of regular basket
stamping. Price as shown- $137 |
|
Although it looks dark in this picture, this
headstall is tan English bridle leather. The buckle sets and browband
conchos are sterling overlay with raised jeweler's bronze beads around the
edge. This headstall is 3/4" wide. |
|
The scalloped buckles to match the conchos are
just the ticket on this 5/8" chestnut headstall. All of the trim is
sterling silver overlay. With a buckle on both cheeks, this headstall has
a very balanced look. |
|
This is a tan English bridle leather headstall
with large solid nickel spots, chrome buckles, 1-1/2" silver plate
conchos at the browband, and 5/8" silver plate conchos at the bit. |
|
This one is extremely custom. Not only does it
have shaped cheek pieces and basket stamping, but we oversized this one
slightly to fit a large Tennessee Walker. This 3/4" chestnut
headstall has chrome buckles and 1-3/4" silver overlay conchos at the
browband. The conchos at the bit are 1" silver overlay. These conchos
have very interesting three dimensional stars. |
|
I just love the browband conchos on this
headstall. They are sterling overlay ovals with raised beads on each side.
The buckles are chrome carts and there are a pair of 1/2" sterling
overlay conchos at the bit. The leather used is tan English bridle.
